ALUS Wins Prestigious Award - Delta Waterfowl..

Delta Waterfowl’s partnership with Canadian Prairie farmers paying big dividends for ducks.

The future of North America’s waterfowling heritage depends on conserving and restoring waterfowl habitats on privately owned agricultural landscapes since that is where most ducks are produced. Furthermore, conservation on a large-scale is the only way to make significant gains in duck populations. Delta Waterfowl’s position is that the only way to achieve large-scale waterfowl conservation goals is through strong partnerships with the farm community, especially in Prairie Canada.

Hunting Participation Continues Long-Term Retreat..

Outdoor stories rarely make national news, but this one wouldn't go away. The headlines said it all—Fewer Americans Hunting and Fishing, Waterfowl Hunters a Vanishing Breed...

The 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation confirmed the gloomy headlines: Hunter numbers slumped to 12.5 million, the lowest they've been since 1970; waterfowling took the biggest hit, falling 27 percent since 2001, and even fishermen were jumping ship with a surprising 12 percent drop from the previous survey.

If there was a silver lining in the press coverage, it was this: For perhaps the first time ever, the mainstream media—including the "liberal press" sportsmen love to vilify—acknowledged hunters as an irreplaceable force for conservation.

Rod Haydel, Haydel's Game Calls

Rod Haydel, of Haydel's Game Calls has a few tips to share when it comes to calling ducks.

1. As long as the ducks are coming in, forget calling. 2. Try calling at birds as they circle when they quarter into the wind. This will make it easier for them to set up for a landing zone into the wind. 3.When the ducks start an erratic wing beat, hit them with a comeback call immediately to bring them back on line. 4. If they look as if they may drift off-line, use single quacks and feed calls to bring them back online. 5. When team calling, one person should be the leader while the others just fill in. Don't compete against yourselves. 6. Realize that not all ducks are callable and that even real ducks do not call in all the ducks all the time.
