Bismarck, N.D -- American waterfowl hunters are one step closer to facing a reduced scaup bag limit (1) for the upcoming hunting season.
That's because the Service Regulations Committee of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) approved a harvest strategy last week that paves the
way for the bag limit reduction. The move was opposed by Delta Waterfowl, the state wildlife agencies in several states,
as well as the Mississippi and Central Flyway Councils and the California Waterfowl Association.
The Adaptive Harvest Management 2008 Report has been released. Optimal regulatory strategies for the 2008 hunting season were calculated using:
(1) harvest-managementobjectives specific to each mallard stock; (2) the 2008 regulatory alternatives; and (3) current population models.
Based on this year’s survey results of 7.87 million mid-continent mallards, 3.05 million ponds in Prairie Canada,815 thousand eastern mallards,
and 914 thousand western mallards in Alaska (532 thousand) and California-Oregon (381 thousand),
the optimal choice for all four flyways is the liberal regulatory alternative.

From the Breeding Grounds: It's Dry, Very Dry..
The 2008 breeding population survey, released this week by the Service, shows a 39 percent decline in Canadian ponds.
The areas across the breeding grounds that are wet are not the productive areas, and the most productive areas are dry...real dry...bad dry."

Rod Haydel, of Haydel's Game Calls has a few tips to share when it comes to calling ducks.
1. As long as the ducks are coming in, forget calling.
2. Try calling at birds as they circle when they quarter into the wind. This will make it easier for them to set up for a landing zone into the wind.
3.When the ducks start an erratic wing beat, hit them with a comeback call immediately to bring them back on line.
4. If they look as if they may drift off-line, use single quacks and feed calls to bring them back online.
5. When team calling, one person should be the leader while the others just fill in. Don't compete against yourselves.
6. Realize that not all ducks are callable and that even real ducks do not call in all the ducks all the time.
